What Does 99% Accuracy Measure? A Reproducible Audit of Shortcut Learning in a Widely Used Fake News Corpus

The study examines the performance of text classifiers on the ISOT/Kaggle 'Fake and Real News' corpus, revealing that high accuracy and F1 scores may not reflect true veracity assessment but rather source and topic separability. The research identifies leakage channels, such as metadata and duplicate documents, which contribute to misleadingly high performance metrics. Even after removing these issues, residual signal from editorial style remains, but it does not generalize well across different topics or datasets.

WHY IT MAY MATTER

This study highlights the importance of understanding the true factors behind high performance metrics in fake news detection, suggesting that current benchmarks may not accurately reflect the ability to assess veracity but rather source and topic separability. It recommends using metadata-only, small-sample, and topic-disjoint baselines for future research to ensure more reliable evaluations.
