Emergent Object Binding Has a Finite Spatial Horizon

Pretrained Vision Transformers encode whether two image patches belong to the same object, with the IsSameObject signal decodable from frozen patch embeddings. The probability of decoding patches as bound decreases with distance, following an exponential decay with a finite length scale, observed across datasets and models.

WHY IT MAY MATTER

This finding suggests that object binding in Vision Transformers is limited by spatial coherence within a finite range, which could influence how models perceive and group objects in images.
