Do Motion Tokenizers for Co-Speech Gesture Generation Encode Gesture Semantics?

The study investigates whether motion tokenizers used in co-speech gesture generation encode gesture semantics. It finds that geometry and handedness can be decoded from token embeddings, but motion category is only weakly decoded despite differences in code usage. The results suggest that reconstruction objectives alone may not capture gesture semantics effectively.

WHY IT MAY MATTER

This research helps improve the design of motion tokenizers by identifying which motion properties are effectively captured, guiding the development of more semantically meaningful gesture generation systems.
