Transferability and Operational Reliability of a Prithvi Crop Classification Foundation Model Under Phenological and Geographic Shift Across Three Continents

This study evaluates the out-of-distribution performance of the Prithvi-EO-2.0 geospatial foundation model (GeoFM) across 37 events in 12 countries on three continents, showing a significant drop in overall accuracy from 0.65 in the US to 0.40 in Europe. The research identifies factors affecting model reliability, including phenological misalignment, observation window adjustments, and class scheme simplification, and provides operational guidance for deploying the model effectively.
