CircuitTree: Composing Circuits into a Syllable Transcriber

The goal of circuit discovery is to decompose a monolithic neural network into tiny modular subnetworks which are interpretable in the sense that each does an identifiable subtask. The authors developed a method for composing an arbitrary number of circuits into a single model using a density-scaled algorithm and introduced a new data structure called CircuitTree. They composed circuits pruned from HuBERT for classifying individual phonemes into a syllable classifier, achieving 64.8% accuracy in transcribing open syllables.
