A token utility method for on-policy distillation (OPD) is derived from the distillation objective, calculating how much each position's loss can decrease under a uniform local KL budget. The utility is defined as $s_t=g_t^\top F_t^\dagger g_t$, where $g_t$ is the logit gradient and $F_t$ is the categorical Fisher matrix. The method, called Fisher Utility Weighting (FUW), improves over uniform OPD on multiple mathematical reasoning benchmarks.
