A Problem with Three Correct Answers. How, When, and Why Does a Model Choose?

A study on the behavior of Qwen 2.5 models (3 sizes) when solving Bertrand's paradox. 18 question phrasings and up to 30 answers per phrasing are analyzed. Models choose one of the three known answers without indicating the question's ambiguity. The method choice becomes distinguishable 5-10 tokens before the pivotal word defining the method.

WHY IT MAY MATTER

The study helps understand how models handle ambiguous questions and how their method choice can be identified through tokens in the reasoning chain.
