Competing Learning in Hybrid Architectures

This paper investigates a competing learning phenomenon in hybrid architectures where different types of mixers compete to learn the same function. The study shows that modern recurrence layers learn retrieval functions faster, suppressing attention learning. A staged training procedure is proposed for pre-training hybrid architectures.
